Many of Öhlins rear shock absorber units are high pressure monotube type shocks. In all of these the damping fluid is pressurized by nitrogen, this helps prevent bubbles forming in the fluid (cavitation) which can be compressed, unlike the damping fluid itself.

These compressable bubbles reduce damping force. Nitrogen is always used since it does not expand with heat and it is an inert gas, unlike air which heats-up when compressed and contains oxygen and water. Water allows oxidation and heat changes damping force, so Nitrogen is the way to go.
